As human activities make the earth warmer, many sacred and important aspects of human life are now under threat, including the pilgrimage to Mecca. The holy land in Saudi Arabia has been hot since ancient times. The hot conditions have occasionally claimed lives among pilgrims, but climate change will cause the threshold for dangerous heat to be exceeded on a regular basis, and temperatures in Mecca will reach unbelievably high levels. Extreme temperatures will pose an even greater threat to the health of Muslims on the pilgrimage, and could change the quality of the Hajj traditions forever.
